Landscape with Grave: Inherited Loss and Representation (2016)
'Landscape with Grave: Inherited Loss and Representation, explores the Australian landscape through ancestral ties to the pioneer artist Frederick Miller Needham (1840–1910), most known for his illustrations in the book, The Australian Irrigation Colonies (1888) commissioned to endorse the establishment of the settlement towns of Mildura and Renmark. For Michael Needham, revisiting familial and cultural heritage means exploring and reinterpreting representation of landscape, which includes navigating postcolonial sentiments expressing a sense of imbued loss associated with the land.
The exhibition features drawing and new sculptural work by Michael Needham alongside original paintings by F. M. Needham and selected works from the Mildura Arts Centre Collection.
